The Worm

The Worm

$11.04

Jimmy McGriff’s B-3 sound was always rooted in blues and gospel, and his soloing could be very smooth and polished. But every once in a while, he had to break out of his own soul box and tear it up on a session. The Worm, issued on Solid State Records in 1968, is the very first place he did. This is the first true, all-out funky burner from McGriff, and it sounds very different from most of the other titles on his shelf. Having a band like this helps: trumpeter Blue Mitchell, tenor saxophonist Fats Theus (with Bob Ashton on baritone and Danny Turner on alto), alternating drummers Mel Lewis and Grady Tate, bassist Bob Bushnell, and guitarist Thornel Schwartz were all in their prime in 1968. The title track, written by McGriff, Theus, and producer Sonny Lester, sets the tone for the whole platter. The saxophone section lays in the cut and is prodded on in a driving, funked-up, hard soul groove by the expanded rhythm section (a B-3 album with a bassist wasn’t unheard of, but it wasn’t standard procedure either). Solos by both McGriff and Mitchell are choppy and punchy in the extreme. The trumpeter is amazing here, offering a small taste of the sound he displayed on 1969′s Collision in Black. But check out the next two tunes, both McGriff originals that push the LP into the red zone and keep it there. “Keep Loose” takes the organist head-to-head against Schwartz’s electric six-string, and forces a showdown. McGriff is like an out-of-control soul singer (James Brown in a concert setting comes to mind), incessantly forcing his band to play faster, greasier, and choppier on chorus after chorus. He ups the intensity level until there is nowhere to go but over the ledge. He takes them there on “Heavyweight,” the very next number, a swinging boppish blues. The horns actually keep the track grounded as McGriff gets terse, dense, and finally unhinged: he’s more adventurous in this solo than he had been before, then he double- and even triple-times the entire band! He brings Bushnell’s bass up the ever-narrowing stairs of the riff until they become a single player, all groove, grit, and grease. McGriff’s cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Think” keeps the exuberance level high. As the horns move right into the Memphis soul vamp, McGriff again plays the part of a vocalist: charging up and down the melody on his keyboards, popping in slippery side chords and harmonic flourishes. Tate’s drums swing freely yet forcefully, and bass and guitar lines are simply nasty. The readings of Kenny Burrell’s “Lock It Up” and Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the ‘A’ Train” are the closest things to “straight” jazz here, though they’re full of razored edges and hard angles. The reading of Neal Hefti’s “Girl Talk” features the horns strolling leisurely on the melody and vamp, but McGriff goes into overdrive again and his solo hits the stratosphere. The Worm is a monster album through and through. Not only is it a revelatory example of McGriff on the wild, it marks one of the first place

The Inch Worm

The Inch Worm

$18.38

Recorded live for a radio broadcast on November 28, 1962 in Stefaniensaal, Graz Austria while Coltrane and his quartet were on tour in Europe. This is Coltrane and his ‘classic quartet’, one of the most famous jazz quartets of all time, featuring jazz all-stars McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Elvin Jones (drums). This is the same line-up that would go on to record the seminal ‘A Love Supreme’, just two years later. Coltrane can be heard here expanding his improvisations and reworking Trane standards like ‘Impressions’ and ‘The Inch Worm’, a modal piece in the style of ‘My Favorite Things’, as well as his very personal interpretation of Cole Porter’s classic ballad ‘Everytime We Say Goodbye’. Get Back Records. 2007.

Worm Ouroboros

Worm Ouroboros

$11.98

Worm Ouroboros (the name refers to a mythological snake that encircles the world, eating its own tail) are a San Francisco-based trio composed of bassist/flutist/vocalist Lorraine Rath, guitarist/vocalist Jessica Way, and drummer Justin Green. The music they make is avant-garde psychedelic metal that incorporates influences from folk, classical, and doom, as well as the work of female artists and female-led groups including Jarboe and Amber Asylum. It rarely gets truly heavy, save in the latter half of nine-plus-minute tracks like “Winter,” “Riverbed,” and “Pearls” — most of the time, the throbbing bass underpins delicate guitar melodies and ultra-clean vocals. But the pretty stuff is plenty pretty enough to be worthwhile on its own, not just as the lead-in to the rockin’ stuff. Listeners will undoubtedly find it quite pleasurable to drift along with the gentle female voices and guitar like water dripping from the roof of a chilly yet surprisingly well-lit cave, without tapping an angry foot and muttering, “Will they just step on the distortion pedal already?!?” If your favorite Black Sabbath song is “Planet Caravan,” wow, is this ever your album. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi Performers: Jessica Way – Glockenspiel, Vocals, Guitar; Justin Green – Drums; Lorraine Rath – Vocals, Flute, Bass

Eagle & the Worm: Good Times

Eagle & the Worm: Good Times

$32.99

Good Times is the appropriately named debut album from Melbourne eight piece Eagle And The Worm, quite possibly the country’s bestest party band, who could not have named their album more appropriately. The eight piece collective centre around charismatic front man Jarrad Brown, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has brought together a phenomenal line up of local musicians for what comes across as a classic debut album. The band consists of Jarrad Brown- Vox, Richard Bradbeer- Bass, Michael Hubbard- Guitar, Ben Morrison- Synth, Joe Cope- Hammond, Jim Lawrie- Drums, Emily Mould- Trombone, Liam McGorry- Trumpet and Ross Beaton- Bari Sax. Good Times started happening in the Australian summer of 2009-10. The album began as many do – on hard drives, 4 track machines, with the help of a really great piano that only stayed in tune in the middle 2 octaves, acoustic guitars, and drum machines. The album was cut across four days with Steven Schram (Little Red, Cat Empire, Little Birdy) at the helm of the mixing desk and lead singer Jarrad working as the creative director. “We didn’t rehearse at all,” Jarrad explains. “I have so many friends who are such great players, I didn’t want to water down anyone’s personality and chemistry on the recording. I wanted to hear the players, experimenting, finding the songs, working hard! I missed hearing that chemistry on records made today. I wanted these great players to sound like great players.” Sonically Good Times moves without hindrance between different concepts and sounds, as expected with most bedroom records. The obvious influence of 60s and 70s pop music stands tall – echoes of Bowie, E Street band and Beach Boys, gracefully done in a contemporary light – the production steers well clear of any retro tags. Jarrad’s ability to draw together so many iconic sounds into songs that work as contemporary pop music stands out as one of the most impressive aspects of this glorious, unpretentious album of songs and sounds. “Futureman” and “All I Know” were the first taste of Eagle Beat in 2010, and the rightful tag of “Party Band” ensued. Like “Futureman” and “All I Know”, new single “Too Young” has the 60s and 70s influences that EATW love written all over it. An exotic journey- Too Young shares the lyrical palate and arrangement motifs of the great Brian Wilson:- an ode to pop music of the 60′s. Easy listening, easy drifting. Like all good records, GoodTimes is about the songs, and about the start-to-finish listening journey. GoodTimes aims to please, with the quality of true songwriting, party times, and pretty amazing production (nice one Steve Schram). This is a record captured in a moment, driven by inspiration & the need to bring back the Good Times Home!
